Brightwells celebrates 500th 4x4 vehicle auction

An important milestone comes up on 28th August 2007 for Brightwells of Leominster – for on that day the firm will be hosting its 500th sale of 4x4 vehicles.

From a standing start in October 1990, Brightwells has now firmly established itself as Europe's largest weekly dedicated 4x4 auction, offering an average of 250 vehicles every single Tuesday. Over 100,000 vehicles have passed through the ring since that first sale 17 years ago, clocking up a turnover of around £420 million for the Herefordshire firm.

"We have built up an extremely loyal customer base over the years and our reach is now truly international," says Vehicle Sales Director, Richard Binnersley, who has himself been with the firm since 1992. "Almost every week we receive vehicles from as far afield as the Orkney Isles in the north, Cornwall in the south, Ipswich in the east and Haverfordwest in the west. Buyers have come from as far as America, Australia, Africa and most of the European countries."

Virtually all the big names in the motor trade have used Brightwells to sell their vehicles at one time or another, including manufacturers like Land Rover, Honda, Subaru and Isuzu; large retail groups such as Pendragon, Inchcape, Sytner and Lex; and financial and public sector institutions like Bank of Scotland, Lloyds TSB and the Environment Agency.

"The prices realised at Brightwells are generally considered to be very strong and we regularly exceed 100% of CAP Clean values," explains Richard (CAP being the trade vehicle valuation 'bible'). "Performance so far this year has averaged 95.8% of CAP Clean with Land Rover products doing especially well – prices of the Discovery 3, Defender and Double-cab Pickup models being notably strong."

Japanese, German and American vehicles are also well represented and on any particular Tuesday buyers may see anything from a WW2 Jeep to a delivery mileage VW Touareg with Playstations in the back. "In the early days we specialised in agricultural 4x4s," says Richard, "but today the majority of vehicles are highly-specced family-friendly leisure vehicles. Around 25% of our buyers are now private individuals who appreciate the big savings to be had by buying at auction."

Whether trade or private, buyers or sellers, everyone is impressed by the modern facilities at Brightwells which occupies a 10-acre site on the northern fringe of Leominster by the A49. Most of the vehicles are displayed indoors, inspection ramps are available, there is ample free parking and plenty of room for transporter manoeuvring – not to mention two excellent onsite cafes. The staff are all very friendly and, unlike at some sales, you can actually understand what the auctioneers are saying!

Especially useful for buyers is the excellent website (www.brightwells.com) which catalogues every vehicle several days before each sale, giving key features like mileage, service history and equipment levels, usually accompanied by a good colour photo. This is free and quick to access, unlike many other auction websites which demand complicated pre-registration procedures. The results of each sale are posted immediately and archived for a week so buyers can research the values of vehicles they are interested in.

Established in 1846, Brightwells also hosts several other vehicle sales including classic and vintage cars, motorhomes, modern cars, motorbikes and heavy plant. Other sales encompass everything from art and antiques to country properties and horses. For more information about all forthcoming sales please call Brightwells on 01568 611166.
